Burn Injuries

Serving All Areas of Maryland, Washington, DC and Northern Virginia

Only those who have experienced a burn injury can truly understand the pain involved in treating a serious burn. Third-degree burns, which go through the dermis to the deep layers of the tissue, can leave a burn injury victim in agony that can only be eased by a medically-induced coma. In many cases, wound debridement, which is the process of removing charred and dead skin, is more painful than the accident that originally caused the burn.

At Mesirow & Associates, PLLC, we are strong advocates for individuals who have suffered burn injuries due to the negligence of another person. No one should have to deal with such a devastating injury. When these tragedies happen, we are honored to stand beside victims in their fight to recover the damages they need to pay for medical treatment and other damages.

The Burn Injury Cases We Handle

Burn injuries can happen in a variety of ways. The following examples are just a small representation of the types of cases we take on.

Chemical burns. In many cases, chemical burns are caused by dangerous conditions in the workplace, such as a factory that fails to protect its workers from exposure to toxic chemicals. Because certain chemicals can be inhaled, they can even cause burns internally, causing damage to the victim’s esophagus and lungs.

Radiation burns. When doctors and nurses fail to control the amount of radiation used to treat cancer and other conditions, they can end up harming their patients.

Car accidents. In catastrophic car accidents, fuel can ignite, causing a fire that burns hot and burns quickly. If an accident victim is too injured to unbuckle their seat belt or leave the vehicle, the injuries can be devastating.

House and apartment fires. When property owners and managers fail to install or maintain smoke detectors, fire escapes, and other fire safety equipment, residents and tenants can be seriously injured in a fire.

The Long-term Effects of a Burn Injury

Burns are classified as first-, second-, or third-degree in terms of severity. Generally, a first-degree burn is considered mild because it only damages the outermost layer of skin.

Second-degree burns are more serious, as they reach deeper tissue and can cause damage to the muscle.

A third-degree burn is the most serious type of burn. These burns reach the deepest layers of tissue in the body and often result in nerve damage, permanent scarring, disfigurement, and loss of function. Accident victims who suffer third-degree burns often require cosmetic surgery to regain their appearance or restore function.

In some cases, a severe burn may result in amputation due to dead or infected tissue. Many third-degree burn victims must also cope with lasting emotional and mental trauma caused by the severe disfigurement that often accompanies these serious burns.

John is phenomenal! His staff immediately took me under their wing and he truly became like family to me. A couple of years ago I was involved in an animal attack that truly changed my life. They maintained integrity and humanity in every way to properly navigate my ordeal. I cannot recommend this firm enough, hands down. Tiana Mapp

John is a gem and I'm tremendously glad that I connected with him. Wanting to put my accident behind me ASAP and minimize time and energy spent toward that end, I made the rookie mistake of attempting to settle on my own. I eventually reached an impasse with the insurance company but simply couldn't bring myself to accept their settlement offer. Drained by all the back-and-forth at this point, I didn't thoroughly research options (which is, ironically, a big part of my reason for not obtaining a lawyer in the first place - there are an overwhelming number of personal injury lawyers in the area!) and simply contacted the first lawyer from whom, simply put, I got a good Google vibe - enter John. That positive impression was immediately confirmed via our first phone call (for which he made himself available that very same day) and further cemented throughout subsequent meetings. John exceeded expectations in every metric, netting me over double the initial offer despite my less-than-ideal handling of everything at the outset. He answered every question I had with ease and honesty and was always available and communicative throughout the process. John is personable, compassionate, transparent, and very good at what he does! I can't recommend him highly enough - hope to never need him again but if so, he will now be my first text!
